I currently have three books in print: a fly tying manual, a collection of essays and fishing stories, and an e-book guide to fly fishing Yellowstone National Park and southwest Montana. In addition, I wrote a chapter for the book 25 Best National Parks to Fly Fish and have several patterns featured in the book Flies for the Greater Yellowstone Area, by Bruce Staples. My shorter work regularly appears in a variety of regional and national fishing magazines, most commonly in Flyfishing & Tying Journal.
Print versions of both of my books can be purchased from Parks' Fly Shop, Amazon, or directly from me. Please contact me for details.
Downloadable samples of my books are available free of charge. You will need a PDF reader such as Adobe Acrobat Reader or a similar program to access these files. Download Acrobat Reader here.
Walter's first book, Yellowstone Country Flies, is a fly tying guidebook devoted to patterns developed by tiers affiliated with Parks' Fly Shop since the shop's founding in 1953. It features tying instructions, pattern histories, and fishing tips for over fifty patterns, plus notes on tools and materials, biographies of fly tiers, and some general guidelines for developing your own patterns. Yellowstone Country Flies is a trade paperback that's 228 pages long and features both color and black and white photography, plus a lay-flat coil binding that makes it a great reference at your fly tying desk. It costs $23.95. Click the image below to access a sample of Yellowstone Country Flies.
My second book is River Characters: Deep Thoughts and Shallow Stories about Fly Fishing. This book is a collection of essays and stories about fly fishing, ranging from dead-serious to (hopefully) humorous. Many are set in the Yellowstone area, but settings range from Walter's boyhood trout streams in the Ozarks to salmon-choked rivers in coastal Washington. While you can purchase print editions from Walter, the book is also available in both print and e-book editions from Amazon.com. Check it out at Amazon, or download an excerpt here or by clicking the image below. In its print edition, River Characters is 173 pages long and runs $10.95, while the e-book is only $2.99 at Amazon.
My third book, Fly Fishing Yellowstone Country: A Basic Guide to Fly Fishing Yellowstone Park and Southern Montana, is an e-book only guide to fly fishing Yellowstone Park and the waters that flow out of the park down to their transition into warmwater fisheries, including the famous portions of both the Yellowstone River and the Missouri River system. This is intentionally priced low and is intended to be an introductory guide. I intend for later editions to cover additional waters, include maps, and be available in print as well, though these later editions will be a heck of a lot pricier than the $2.99 price point of the first-edition e-book.
